March | April | May | June | July | August | September | October | November

Week of March 5th

Plant your tomato seeds inside this week so that they are mature enough to plant outside by May 1st. See Starting a Vegetable Garden for details.

Week of March 12th

Make sure you have your radish, lettuce, pea, onion sets, and spinach seeds ordered and ready for planting April 10th.

Week of March 19th

Spray Magnolias, Pines, and Evergreens for over-wintering insects and disease with Dormant Oil Spray before foliage comes out.

Week of March 26th

Cut back grasses and prune the dead out of your shrubs and trees. Also cut off any sucker shoots.

Week of April 2nd

Fertilize your lawn. Apply Crabgrass Preventer, if needed, before the end of April. Unless you are seeing bare spots, Crabgrass Preventer stops germination.

Week of April 9h

Fertilize your shrubs and trees. Apply Lime to your lawn.

Week of April 16th

  1. Apply a pre-emergent bed weed control, such as Preen, to your beds.
  2. Do not plant tender plants, annuals, and vegetables (unless cold tolerant, i.e. broccoli) until danger of frost is gone (May 15 - 30th).

Week of April 23rd

  1. Check your Crabapples and Cherries for tent caterpillars. Pull them off and dispose. Never burn the nests on the tree!
  2. Continue to monitor frost warnings and cover plants as needed with burlap.
  3. Clean out debris from your landscape beds.

  4. Prune out any dead, diseased, or dying branches.

Week of April 30th

  1. It is still not safe to plant tender plants yet.

  2. Now is a good time to treat the dandelions in your lawn. Use a Weed & Feed.

  3. Apply insecticidal soap to your shrubs.

  4. Watch for tent caterpillars.

  5. Top dress your beds with mulch.

Week of May 7th

  1. Saw Flies are out on Mugo Pines, Austrian Pines, and any other hard needle pines. The look like very small worms. Spray with Seven.
  2. Watch out for Gypsy Moths. Now is the time to spray for these. Spray with Sevin.

Week of May 14th

Don't be in a hurry to prune out frost damaged branches from in your shrubs and trees - many of these branches will re-leaf.

Week of May 21st

  1. The best time to prune plants is right after they bloom - this will insure flowers for next year.
  2. When planting Impatiens, try to place them in an area where they will receive part shade.
  3. Watch for Powdery Mildew on your roses and perennials. Treat with fungicide.

Week of May 28th

  1. It is safe to plant your annuals and vegetables now - frost warnings are only a memory.
  2. Prune off the spent and dead flowers from your roses so they don't develop rose hips. Make sure to prune back to a 5 leaf stem. This will encourage more flowers.

  3. Start spraying Hybrid Tea roses with insecticide/fungicide according to directions.

  4. Start spraying your fruit trees with fruit tree spray as a preventative application. Fruit trees need to be sprayed throughout the growing season.

  5. Water, water, water NEW plants every day until they are established at least 3 weeks. New plantings must receive 1/2" rain per day in order not to have to water.
