Make sure you have your radish, lettuce, pea, onion sets, and spinach seeds ordered and ready for planting April 10th. |

Spray Magnolias, Pines, and
Evergreens for over-wintering insects and disease with Dormant Oil Spray before foliage comes out. |

Cut back grasses and prune the dead out of your shrubs and trees. Also cut off any sucker shoots.

2nd
Fertilize your lawn. Apply
Crabgrass Preventer, if needed,
before the end of April. Unless
you are seeing bare spots,
Crabgrass Preventer stops germination. |

Fertilize your shrubs and
trees. Apply Lime to your lawn. |
|
Week of April
16th
- Apply a pre-emergent bed weed
control, such as Preen, to your beds.
- Do
not plant tender plants,
annuals, and vegetables
(unless cold tolerant, i.e.
broccoli) until danger of
frost is gone (May 15 -
30th).

23rd

Check your Crabapples and
Cherries for tent
caterpillars. Pull them off
and dispose. Never burn the
nests on the tree!

Continue to monitor frost warnings and cover plants as needed
with burlap.

Clean out debris from your
landscape beds.

Prune out any dead,
diseased, or dying branches.

It is still not safe to
plant tender plants yet.

Now is a good time to treat
the dandelions in your lawn.
Use a Weed & Feed.

Apply insecticidal soap to
your shrubs.

Watch for tent caterpillars.

Top dress your beds with mulch.

Week of May 7th
- Saw Flies are out on
Mugo Pines, Austrian Pines,
and any other hard needle
pines. The look like very
small worms. Spray with
Seven.
- Watch out for Gypsy Moths. Now is the time to spray for these. Spray with
Sevin.

Week of May
14th
Don't be in a hurry to prune out
frost damaged branches from in
your shrubs and trees - many of
these branches will re-leaf. |

Week of May
21st
- The best time to prune
plants is right after they
bloom - this will insure
flowers for next year.
-
When planting Impatiens, try to
place them in an area where they will receive part shade.
-
Watch for Powdery Mildew on
your roses and perennials.
Treat with fungicide.

Week of
May 28th
-
It is safe to plant your
annuals and vegetables now -
frost warnings are only a
memory.
-
Prune off the spent and dead
flowers from your roses so
they don't develop rose
hips. Make sure to prune
back to a 5 leaf stem. This
will encourage more flowers.

Start spraying Hybrid Tea
roses with
insecticide/fungicide
according to directions.
-
Start spraying your fruit
trees with fruit tree spray
as a preventative
application. Fruit trees
need to be sprayed throughout the
growing season.
-
Water, water, water NEW
plants every
day until they are
established at least 3
weeks. New plantings must receive
1/2" rain per day in order
not to have to water.
